Chinese Elm repotting 2026

3 April 2026 at 10:37

16.03.2026 β€” Repotting update, placed it back into the same pot. Over the autumn and winter it developed a nice amount of new roots, practically all around the trunk, and I’m really happy with the progress β€” right after cutting off the ground layer there were very few roots to work with. I reduced the root mass quite a bit this time, hoping this will be the beginning of a good nebari.
The thread-graft is looking promising as well. The buds are swelling, so with a bit of luck it might finally take this season.

Shin Deshojo Maple – 2026 repotting

14 March 2026 at 18:07

14.03.2026 β€” Repotting the Shin Deshojo maple (after removing the rootstock, air-layer from last season)

I decided to try the method with a wooden box β€” boards connected with nails. The flat and fairly wide shape should theoretically speed up the development of a β€œpancake-style” nebari in the long term.

Now it’s just a matter of watering and fertilizing; the tree will be allowed to grow freely without any pruning so it can build up as much mass as possible.

I may also make an additional (backup) air-layer, since this is the only Shin Deshojo I own.

Arakawa summer 2023 – spring 2026

2 April 2026 at 19:06

Barking progress from summer 2023 to spring 2026. This process takes a long timeβ€”at least several years are needed for the bark of the Arakawa variety to become mature, corky, and rough. This gives the appearance of an old, mature tree, unique and striking look.
