You maybe remember the beginnings of my tanuki-projects from November 2022?

Here is how it went on with the first combination of a thuja-base "merried" to

two Juniperus nursery-plants.

The  second Tanuki project. Again a wooden Thuja occidentalis base and two Juniperus blauwii specimen

connected to the trunc.

And yes, the bleached wood of the trunc is looking awfully unatural.

The weathering will be going to correct that by the time ...

A Chamacyparis obtusa i acquired in a small nursery as a fairly neglected bush.

The leafs of this particular cultivar are very brittle, so not easy to style this specimen wtihout losses.

The first styling-session therefor had its "collateral-damages" ...

The bark of the trunc is very mature.

Since this hinoki-cultivar is growing very slowly i consider the tree to be pretty old.

Over all the plant is a bit to dense (as always in my Hinoki-projects) to keep the energy.

I look forward to reduce the design in future as well as improving the ten-jin, if not removing it ...

And the source-plant as rawest material.

I tried to show the status quo blended into the former dimension of the

bushy scrub :

A taxus baccata i acquired from a bonsai-fellow. The tree originally came from Poland.

From the beginning this yew had been strong and healthy and went during my possession through two

winter-saisons without any difficulties.

The deadwood-work has to be improved and the overall shape is still a little bit too unrefined yet.

Well, i am not unsatisfied with the development after two years  ...

I like this front-view:

Or rahter this one?

For my taste this little Taxus baccata var. repanda had been to wide (pictures in posting as of 12.2020).

For that resaon i decided to make a complete makeover of the tree's design, cause the dimension led to a

very young appearance of the yew. Now i like it better. The jins will be reworks in a couple of weeks.

I worked on that yew in company with my-Bonsai-Companion Jens. That was great fun ...

The front?

Better?

reduction_to_the_max

17 January 2023 at 17:13

A Juniperus Squamata Blue Star (?) i acquired in March 2020 in an old nursery as raw-material. Since the tree had an utterly useless structure to be developed as a bonsai, i decided to select one of the two trunc-lines (posting of Septembre 2021).

Now i decided to follow this path of reduction. After a heavy bending of the trunc had been done the second time, i selected, wired and formed the needle-pads and sat the branch-strutcure.

I wanted an overall shorter and slender tree with less branches than before, hence the more elegant appearance.

tiny_yew_update

So it went on with the little twisted yew. I have to admit that the overall design is a bit boring

at that stage of development yet. The crown appeares too routinely and does not suit well to the

contorted trunc. I wil fix that in autumn this year.

Hinoki_make_over

10 May 2023 at 21:16
A couple of weeks ago, i had been in the mood for a make over
of a Hinoki as shown in December '22 on this blog.
Eversince I wanted to give it a try on a windswept design.
In addition to that, I will create a concrete-slab for this particular tree.
So just for the record, this is how it begun with the newly designed Hinoki ...

No major changes so far. The tree has still to establish himself into his pot ...

I am satisfied, that the tree made it so well through the wintermonth and the relativly cold springtime.

Now I am waiting for new grows. We need strength in that Chamacyparis obtusa ...

One day my wife and me went through a tree-nursery in our hood.

My wife suddenly discovered a nice looking Chamacyparis obtusa nana.

She asked me to style this tree for a bonsai.

Well, through a few detours this Hinoki finaly found its way into my garden.

In January 2022 I styled this tree as shown in posting of 22th Jan. of 2022 on this blog.

In April 2023 I enhanced the design of the tree a bit.

Bought this one on the trophy in Genk/Belgium this year.

A Juniperus Sabina-yamadori. I consider this material as quite promising on the one hand,

but very difficult on the other hand.

This because of the lower, very elongated  branch with almost no green on it.

Picture number #3 shows a virtual as a study of my designing-vision.

Made this quickshot of my new J. sabina with my mobile, after the first styling-session.

Sorry for the bad quality. 'Have to put up my photo-equipment to do better fotos.

According to the design, I tried on a classic, maybe neo-classic, mainstream or whatever style ...

At present I am very captivated of  the japanese styling-approach ...

And, as always, the tree looks by far more "3d-ish" in nature, than on this particular bad foto ...

Taxus_Tanuki

22 June 2023 at 20:36

I decided trying to transform an old Taxus stump into a Tanuki.

The living part will be Taxus as well. The stump has been weathered for a couple of years outside in my

garden.

Then I gave it to a professional sandblasting company. Maybe I will make some changes and carvings

here and there, but by and large the basis will stay as it is now. The wire-cutter is placed as a scale.

Height: 50 cm, Nebari: up to 30 cm.

The draft of a virtual according to  the previous posting.

It may seem a bit eccentric, but it is just a draft and this picture is just a "screen-shot of my mind"

today. It will defenitly turn out different, but for me it is interesting to see the difference between

phantasy and reality, after the first maturing years of this marriage.

nice_but_wrong

7 July 2023 at 14:36

According to working with yamadori-material or container-conifers from a garden-center, I have always been thought, that the assumption "finding the smallest tree" (within in the material) would give me a hint to a good first styling-result.

Well in this particular case my assumption was defenitly wrong. A Chamacyparis (no matter what kind or cultivar) would never "put" the leader-shoot down, to form a, what bonsai-people would call a "pad".

I signed the weak points with drawn arrows in the posting-image.

Therefore, I will cancel my former idea, in favour of a more upright design.

The following days I will post the result of my attempt for a more natural design.

Plastic_tree

12 July 2023 at 19:34

I know, I know, the tree now looks rather like a plastic-tree.

But I am pretty sure, that the overall appearance will improve within the next two years or so.

Sometimes things have to become worse, to get better in the long run ...

So just for the record:

update_Thuja_occidentalis

3 October 2023 at 16:08

Well, the tree had a good growing-season. There had been no fungus-issues like last year.

I clipped the shoots a bit. The tree is now 57 cm in height, 50 cm in width, 47 cm in depth and

the nebari messures 23 centimeters on its widest extent.

The tree is for sale ...

sabina_for_sale

3 October 2023 at 18:46

The tree decided to leave my garden.

I wonder were this specimen is heading for ...

This Juniperus Sabina is for sale.

Today I clipped off the extremly extended shoots in order to distribute the energy all over the tree.

It really gained a lot of energy this season.

I am pretty satisfied with my designing-efforts, although this Juniper decided to leave.

In particular I like this special green color of Sabinas ...

small_and_clean_Thuja

5 October 2023 at 09:08

Not much to say about this small Thuja.

I just wanted to creat a clean design and getting to know

the reaction of this species to certain designing-interventions.

The leaves of this tree will even become smaller in the course of time.

Just a small clean tree ...

This tree will also be sold by the way.

wind_in_the_Hinoki

6 October 2023 at 06:34

An update of the windswept Hinoki.

What a pity that I can not show this tree with the help of some kind of holographic technique.

I mean, in nature the design of the tree is much more "3d-ish" and does not come as that bushy cluster

shown in the 2d image. But this always a matter of fact ... I designed this tree out of cointainer-material

from a nursery.

This Hinoki would suit very well in a moon-pot or on a stone-slap.

It is for sale, in spite of beeing far from glory.

Maybe someone becomes attached to this particular tree and is willing to enhance the initial

design-plan. Anyway, here are the pictures as of today ...

6 October 2023 at 22:49

I just unwired this one, There are a lot of backbudding going on this yew.

The green part of the tree is by far to large. The carvings definitely need to be overhauled and improved.

I am really lookig foreward for wintertime, when I will wire this yew again.

Here are a few glimpses before  the next designing step.

Phase one: The accquired raw-material in 2021...

Phase two: "cutting out" the trunc-line, reducing the greenmass...

Phase three as of  2022: further reduction after a good growing-saeson ...

Phase four as of January 2023: First styling ...

Phase five: Second styling, the tree as of today.

Amd the overblended picture as I showed it before to demonstrate the ration of reduction from the former rawplant to the actual state of development:
